Gemma wareham
Gemma Wareham is a devoted chamber musician, performing with a diverse range of ensembles throughout the UK and abroad. Gemma studied as an undergraduate at the University of Manchester and subsequently graduated with a master’s in music with distinction from the Royal Northern College of Music in 2007. She moved to London shortly after her studies in order to take up her place in Britain’s young professional orchestra, Southbank Sinfonia. As an orchestral cellist Gemma has had the pleasure of performing with orchestras and ensembles such as Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Manchester Camerata, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Brigantes Orchestra and Orchestra Nova. Equally at home on the theatre stage as the concert stage, Gemma has appeared in a number of productions at the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company including Macbeth (RSC) and All’s Well That Ends Well (NT).
Gemma is a founding member of the Berkeley Ensemble, formed in 2008. Its acclaimed performances and recordings celebrate a broad spectrum of chamber music for mixed ensemble with a particular focus on contemporary chamber music, especially by British composers. Since its founding in 2008 the ensemble has premiered over 40 works commissioned by or written for the group, and recorded nine albums. The ensemble’s recent recording of Beethoven’s Septet was lauded by BBC Radio 3’s Andrew McGregor as ‘inhabit[ing] the heart of this rewarding score with a grace and ease I found totally engaging’ whilst Lennox Berkeley: Stabat Mater was nominated for a Gramophone Award in 2017 and praised in the magazine’s review for ‘a performance of shimmering intensity’.
A dedicated educator, Gemma relishes the chance to inspire and facilitate through workshops, performing for and with young people in schools across the country. In addition Gemma has sustained a busy teaching practice over the last two decades teaching privately in London and Bedfordshire, and has been Director of the City of Sheffield Youth Orchestra since 2016.
