Martin André
Martin is the Co-Founder and Co-Director of the Islington Festival, and lives in Islington. Having studied the piano and later the timpani, he changed direction and found his vocation in conducting. Dividing his work between opera and orchestra repertoire, Martin has performed in the concert halls and opera houses of over 30 countries during his long career, particularly enjoying the operas of Verdi and Janáček, and the symphonies of Tchaikovsky and Beethoven. He has worked extensively in the Netherlands, Germany and Portugal, further afield in Thailand, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand...
In Lisbon, he took on the role of Intendant of the National Opera Company and National Symphony Orchestra simultaneously for 3 years, managing a Company of 350 people: perfect training for his current role in the Festival! Chamber music has always been his passion, both as a pianist and especially as a listener, and so the opportunity to create and manage a Festival in his home community is a dream come true.
Martin has had a season ticket for Arsenal Football Club since he was a teenager, and now lives only 2 minutes away from the stadium! He also has a Life Membership for Gloucestershire County Cricket Club.
